Plot/Synopsis:

Lucien Bourrache is a legionnaire who captivates any woman he meets, earning him the nickname of Gueule d’Amour. Then one day he meets and is entranced by a beautiful young woman. At first she appears to reciprocate his feelings but later Lucien fears that she may be playing him along. Is Madeleine really in love with him or is she just a manipulative adventurer?

Because the story involves mainly just three characters, we get to know each of them quite well – or at least we think we do. All three main actors distinguish themselves by holding something back until the film’s tragic denouement – Gabin is particularly surprising, displaying the kind of dramatic intensity we should only expect to see in a more mature actor, such as in his post World War Two film performances. Gabin’s two co-stars, René Lefèvre and Mireille Balin, are no less captivating. Balin is deliciously seductive in this role, which is shrouded in ambiguity. We never really know whether her character is to be trusted or not, whether she really has any affection for Gabin’s character. It is this uncertainty which gives the film its dangerously unpredictable feel and holds our attention so tightly.

Gueule d’amour film one of a series of monumental films which Gabin appeared in between 1936 and 1939, including La Grande illusion and Pépé-le-Moko . Many refer to this period as the Golden Age of French cinema, and watching this film you can easily believe that to be the case.

Plot Summary :

As the Russians advance through Berlin in the spring of 1945, Adolf Hitler and his remaining military and secretarial staff shelter in his large bunker complex in the centre of the city. His mood swings between completely unjustified optimism that his forces will still break through, and rage against the incompetence and betrayal of his military commanders. Reality does finally start to break through and the Fuhrer and the others in the bunker start to make their final personal preparations for the inevitable.

Plot:

Plot / Synopsis

The film is based on a real-life battle that took place at Hill 3234 in early 1988, during the last large-scale Soviet military operation Magistral. In the film, only one soldier from the company survives and the company is said to have been “forgotten” by the military command because of the Soviet withdrawal. But in reality, the story was different. The 9th Company, 345th Guards Airborne Regiment was pinned down under heavy fire on Hill 3234 between the 7th and 8th of January 1988. They managed to stop twelve attacks by an estimated 250−500 Mujahideen. The company lost six men. Another 28 out of the total 39 were wounded. Two of the killed soldiers were posthumously awarded the golden star of the Hero of the Soviet Union. The unit was in constant communication with headquarters and got everything the regimental commander, Colonel Valery Vostrotin, could provide in terms of ammunition, reinforcements, and helicopter evacuation of the wounded.

Plot / Synopsis

Plot / Synopsis

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (aka Baron Prasil) begins with a modern astronaut named Joe arriving on the moon, only to discover that’s he’s already been beaten by the likes of Jules Verne, Baron Munchausen and Cyrano de Bergerac, who toast to the new arrival from their lunar-Victorian dinner table. The baron invites Joe onto his Pegasus-drawn frigate for an interstellar traipse back to terrestrial territory.

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen was Czechoslovakian special-effect master Karel Zeman’s follow-up to The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. Using Gustav Dore paintings as backdrops, Zeman recounts the many mendacious adventures of the boastful Baron. The film opens on the surface of the moon, where a modern-day cosmonaut confronts both Munchausen and another legendary pioneer space traveller, Cyrano de Bergerac. The cosmonaut then joins the Baron for further highlight suspect escapades. Combining live action, stop-motion animation and deliberately unreal backgrounds, The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (original title: Baron Prasil) is a wonderful bouquet to the spirit of imagination–or “the spirit of man”, as the cosmonaut puts it.
