Runtime: 52 minutes
Country: Sweden
Language: Silent
Subtitles: English inter-titles
Genre: Drama

Director: Victor Sjöström

Cast:
Victor Sjöström … Terje Vigen

Bergliot Husberg … Mrs. Vigen

Plot/Synopsis:

The story is set in the early 19th century and may may remind some viewers of the tale of Enoch Arden (which had supplied the plot of one of D.W. Griffith’s strongest Biograph dramas back in 1911). Terje Vigen is a fisherman who quits the seafaring life to marry and start a family in Grimstad, a coastal village. But the Napoleonic wars sweep Europe, and when the British navy sets up a blockade of his island the threat of starvation becomes a reality. Rather than see his wife and daughter starve Terje attempts to run the blockade and return with food. He almost succeeds, but the British spot him in his small boat, give chase, and eventually catch him. Dragged onto the deck of the British frigate he begs for mercy, but the Captain coldly ignores his pleas and has him imprisoned. Five years later Terje is released and returns to his village to find strangers living in his home: his wife and daughter died of starvation. Years pass, and Terje dreams only of vengeance. When a yacht founders off the coast he rescues the owner with his wife and child, and recognizes him as the British captain who denied him mercy years earlier…

Indeborg Holm (1913)

August 17, 2010 · Posted in Drama, Swedish Movies | Share

Original title: Ingeborg Holm
Year: 1913
Runtime: 1 hour, 12 minutes
Country: Sweden
Language: Silent
Subtitles: English inter-titles
Genre: Drama

Director: Victor Sjöström

Cast:
Hilda Borgström … Ingeborg Holm
Aron Lindgren … Sven Holm, Older Eric Holm
Erik Lindholm … Employee in Shop
Georg Grönroos … Poorhouse Superintendant
William Larsson … Police Officer
Richard Lund … Doctor
Carl Barcklind … House Doctor

Plot/Synopsis:

Ingeborg Holm’s husband opens up a grocery store and life is on the sunny side for them and their three children. But her husband becomes sick and dies. Ingeborg tries to keep the store, but because of the lazy, wasteful staff she eventually has to close it. With no money left, she has to move to the poor-house and she is seperated from her children. Her children are taken care of by foster-parents, but Ingeborg simply has to get out of the poor-house to see them again…

Over the weekend I watched ‘Ingeborg Holm’ (1913), directed by Victor Sjöström, and starring Hilda Borgström as Ingeborg. This early Swedish feature is 96 minutes long, and it has recently been released by Kino Video. I must admit that the film rather astonished me because of the quality of pacing, of acting, of story – nearly everything; others from this year and before that were anything near a feature length, [and] for the most part, are exceedingly antiquated by modern standards. ‘Ingeborg Holm’ is anything BUT antiquated. [...] The story concerns what were called ‘workhouses’ in Scandinavia. It begins by showing Ingeborg Holm’s husband, through diligence and good economic behavior, being able to begin to operate his own grocery store. Unfortunately, just after opening, the husband suffers a hemorrhage and dies. Ingeborg takes over the running, but unfortunately, through the untoward grafting of an employee she ends up bankrupt. She and her three children are left with a choice to take 20 kronor a month or for Ingeborg to go work in a workhouse. She chooses the latter. I won’t give away all the plot, but you can be sure that she suffers the incredible inhumanity that was inherent in that system at the time. It is said that this film nearly single-handedly began an improvement in the social system of Sweden.

Anne-Marie Daehli… Inger Munch – 1875
Johan Halsborg … Dr. Christian Munch – 1884
Gro Jarto … Laura Catherine Munch – 1884

Plot/Synopsis:

Following a rough chronology from 1884 to 1894, when Norwegian artist Edvard Munch began expressionism and established himself as northern Europe’s most maligned and controversial artist, the film also flashes back to the death from consumption of his mother, when he was five, his sister’s death, and his near death at 13 from pulmonary disease. The film finds enduring significance in Munch’s brief affair with “Mrs. Heiberg” and his participation in the café society of anarchist Hans Jaeger in Christiania and later in Berlin with Strindberg. Through it all comes Munch’s melancholy and his desire to render on canvas, cardboard, paper, stone, and wood his innermost feelings.

Famously described by the late Ingmar Bergman as ‘a work of genius’, Peter Watkins’ multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter, it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch’s formative years in late 19th century Kristiania (now Oslo), Watkins uses his trademark style to create a vivid picture of the emotional, political, and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art.

The young artist (Geir Westby) has an affair with ‘Mrs. Heiberg’ (Gro Fraas), a devastating experience that will haunt him for the rest of his life. His work is viciously attacked by critics and public alike and he is forced to leave his home country for Berlin, where, along with the notorious Swedish playwright August Strindberg, he becomes part of the cultural storm that is to sweep Europe.

There have been countless film biographies of famous artists, but only a handful can be considered major works in their own right. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins’ extended 221-minute version, originally made for television.

His father, Don Jose (Hans Alfredson), is an artist and discovers early his son’s talent when the young boy makes a sculpture of Don Jose with his food. When Pablo is old enough (and now portrayed by Gösta Ekman) his father takes him to Madrid, so that Pablo can study art. On their way, they encounter two robbers who try to hurt a beautiful girl named Dolores (Lena Olin). After a slapstick number in which Picasso defeats the two attackers, she gives him a bottle of paint, containing a djinn. With the paint from that bottle he signs all his paintings. At the academy of art Pablo’s talent is praised and awarded. When he returns home with a portrait of his mother Dona Maria (Margaretha Krook), he is equally praised there…

Director: Ingmar Bergman

Cast: Bibi Andersson (Alma, The Nurse), Liv Ullmann (Elisabeth Vogler,The Actress), Margaretha Krook (The Doctor), Gunnar Björnstrand (Mr. Vogler),, Jörgen Lindström (The Boy, Elisabeth’s Son)

Plot/Synopsis:

The film concerns two women – an actress and a nurse – who are physically almost identical, and one of whom (significantly the actress) has lost the ability to communicate. Alma, the nurse, appears to be a well-adjusted, thoroughly respectable young woman with an idyllic future mapped out before her. Yet, as the story unfolds, it soon becomes apparent that her normality is merely a surface illusion. Beneath her calm veneer we begin to see something much darker, much more passionate and dangerous. Elisabeth, the silent actress, is her alter ego, perhaps her true nature, the part of her that will not speak.

Whilst performing a stage play, a well-known actress Elisabeth Vogler loses the power of speech. There follows a mental breakdown throughout which she is bed-ridden and unable, or unwilling, to speak. Her doctor sends her to a house by the sea, to be cared for by a young nurse, Alma. The latter becomes fascinated by her silent patient and reveals intimate secrets about her own past. Elisabeth’s unbroken silence soon perturbs Alma’s calm, and the nurse undergoes a strange inner transformation…

Genre: Comedy

Director: Josef Fares

Cast:
Torkel Petersson … Jörgen
Jan Fares … Aziz – Farsan
Hamadi Khemiri … Sami
Juan Rodríguez … Juan
Anita Wall … Edith
Nina Zanjani … Amanda
Jessica Forsberg … Lotta

Plot/Synopsis:

Some movies deal with weightily with philosophical issues around life, relationships, aging and death, while others take the approach of examining those dicey topics more simply, by showing us the lives of ordinary people doing ordinary things, as if we’re a fly on the wall of their lives.

The charming, simple Swedish film Farsan, directed by Josef Fares, takes the latter approach to mostly good effect. Aziz (Jan Fares, the director’s father and a frequent actor in Fares’ films) is a confident, genial older gentleman, widowed ten years but still in love with his dead wife; his life revolves around his adult son, Sami (Hamadi Khemiri), Sami’s expectant wife Amanda (Nina Zanjani), and his impending first grandchild. Aziz smiles and charms his way around the nooks and crannies of his comfortable life and routine.

Amanda and Sami love Aziz, but because they are his primary source of both comfort and social life, they’re also feeling a bit cramped by his blissfully unaware and constant presence in their lives. Neither Sami nor Amanda want to hurt Aziz’s feelings — he really is a very nice, kind-hearted, courtly and old-fashioned sort of gentleman — and so they perpetuate the cycle that’s driving them crazy by never saying what they really think. Amanda, nearing the end of her rope, suggests to Sami that perhaps if Aziz would start dating, they might get a little space without hurting his father’s feelings…. (abridged from Movie City News)

Ove Porath … Boy
Axel Slangus … Bridge Keeper
Gudrun Brost … Frida
Oscar Ljung … Simon

Plot/Synopsis:

In Sweden, in the Fourteenth Century, Karin is the favorite and virgin daughter of the religious Töre and Märeta. She is the pride and joy of her family. On the day of Our Lady of Virgins, her father asks her to go to a distant church with her pregnant stepsister and carry some candle for Our Lady. On the way through the woods, the naive girl leaves her stepsister resting in a small farm and continues her journey alone. She meets three shepherd brothers and invites them to share her food. Then, they rape and kill her, under the eyes of her hidden stepsister. The same night, the three brothers arrive and look for shelter at her home. The revenge of her father is very impressive.

The Virgin Spring is a film so graceful, subtle and omniscient that when we experience powerfully emotional moments, we haven’t even expected them, and when we have, it’s already hit us. With every detail of every department, the result is utter simplicity, utter docility, no fluctuation in the face of whatever brutality or emotional quakes, making them all that much more profoundly moving. The story reveals and illustrates the characters up until the fatal flaw causes the end of the movie to be inevitable, but we never saw that particular element that way, because everything is utterly natural.

Its pitch-perfect genuine bloom is the effect of the film being pared down to its barest intentions. And these are not only fundamental questions, but fundamental questions in a time and place in history where needs and desires were purely fundamental. The characters, existing in medieval Sweden, could have no concept of how complicated human beings’ intentions could be as they are in modern times. It begins with a prosperous Christian whose daughter, Karin played by Birgitta Pattersson, is appointed to bring candles to the church. This is a big deal around here. Karin is accompanied by her pregnant foster sister, Ingeri played by Gunnel Lindblom, who secretly worships a Norse pagan God. What conflict! What happens from there, I will not say. But anywhere you may read about this film you will see that it was the basis for Wes Craven’s exploitation flick The Last House on the Left, but in that exploitation of a genuine bloom of grace, the ensuing turning points in the plot achieve the exact opposite effect in every way I’ve explained. When you see The Virgin Spring, you will be presented with people who search for the same answers and consolations most of us still seek today. Even if a viewer would sooner find themselves watching Craven’s film than anything by Ingmar Bergman, once they would get around to The Virgin Spring, they’d find themselves subjected to an unexpected, and wholly memorable, experience more rare than the later film.

Plot/Synopsis:

WILD STRAWBERRIES is among Ingmar Bergman’s most rich and contemplative films, a lyrical reflection on guilt and disappointment in the form of a spiritual journey. The movie stars Victor Sjöström as Professor Isak Borg, an elderly academic who takes a trip by car from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary university degree, accompanied by his daughter-in-law (Ingrid Thulin). Along the way, they meet various passengers who seem to be weighed down by unresolved ethical dilemmas. Meanwhile, Borg’s own existential crisis is triggered by dreams and memories in which he is confronted with past disappointments, missed opportunities, and troubled personal relationships with those close to him–his son (Gunnar Björnstrand), his mother (Naima Wifstrand), and his late wife (Gertrud Fridh). The film features stunning imagery, most notably in the flashback, dream, and nightmare sequences, as well as an outstanding final film performance by Sjöström (who is also a famed Swedish director of the silent era). This film was released soon after THE SEVENTH SEAL, which had earned Bergman accolades from film critics and moviegoers the world over. Though similarly challenging and philosophically complex, WILD STRAWBERRIES is often considered the more accessible of the two movies because of its ultimate warmth and affirmation of life.
