Plot/Synopsis:
Jaume, an older and ill medieval literature professor, has returned to Barcelona to die. He has been in love twice in his life: the first time, in his youth, with a fellow university friend Pere, now married with a daughter, and the second time with a student David, a rebel-without-a-cause type talent. Jaume wants to save David and turn him into some sort of spiritual heir. David has gotten Alba pregnant but has a rather special extra job. Alba doesn’t know if she wants to carry the baby and talks it over with her mother Fanny. Fanny is afraid to get old with Pere as just being a wife. Five characters, in an almost race against the clock, argue, struggle and hurt each other. At the same time they discover that there’s a fine line between wishes and making them possible with another person. BELOVED/FRIEND is a dense and dark film, that shows these 5 people in an almost sadistic, hard way. In a shattering final everything is resolved and at the same time nothing is accomplished. Writer-director Lucía Puenzo follows up her feature debut, the festival favorite XXY, with The Fish Child, a romantic crime drama adapted from her novel of the same name. Lala (Inés Efron, who also starred in XXY) is an Argentinean girl from a wealthy family. She’s desperately in love with the family’s young live-in maid, La Guayi (singer Mariela Vitale, making her feature-film debut), and she’s jealous of La Guayi’s many other admirers. When Lala’s politically active father, Bronté (Pep Munné), dies under mysterious circumstances, she runs off to La Guayi’s remote hometown in Paraguay, hoping that her lover will follow. There, she uncovers the truth about La Guayi’s sordid past, and the maid’s troubled relationship with her own father, a telenovela star named Sócrates (real-life Paraguayan soap star Arnaldo André). Lala also explores the local legend of “The Fish Child.” Meanwhile, La Guayi is imprisoned for her suspected involvement in Bronté’s death, and when Lala finds out, she jeopardizes her own freedom by returning home. In Puenzo’s novel, written when she was just 23 years old, the story is told from the point-of-view of Lala’s family dog. The film features an appearance by the Paraguayan musical group the Potrankos.

Paula is a pornographic nightclub performer who has been institutionalized for the murder of another performer also named Paula. She is questioned by Alma Pereira but the answers are evasive. The camera’s subjective view into Paula’s mind proves to be equally distorted by the girl’s hazy libido, which is haunted by the other Paula. Were they lovers? Enemies? Or the same person? An “audiovisual experience” based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll/Hyde novel, PAULA-PAULA is more of a vehicle for the music tracks that late Austrian jazz composer Friedrich Gulda’s family gifted to Franco recently.

What you first need to understand before watching Jess Franco’s Paula-Paula is that it’s not a normal movie. There’s not script, there’s a beginning and ending, but something else in between. It’s actually what the title say it is, an audiovisual experience that could belong in an art gallery. Yes, here we have a 66 minute long piece of video art. Maybe more people should appreciate it if it was shown on a wall in a club, or in dark small cinema during an art exhibition. The majority of these minutes is filled with Gulda’s fantastic jazz music, and some piece of his classical works too, and the scenes of dancing, mirror-effects and sex goes on forever. But there’s never anything tasteless. It’s arty and most of the time very cool, beautiful and trippy.

Pedro Almodóvar’s macabre suspense thriller is about an obsession that, though not exactly magnificent, has a fanatical intensity. Antonio Banderas plays a Madrid plastic surgeon, wealthy, cultured and respected; he gives brilliant lectures and research papers on advances in face-transplant surgery. Daringly, heretically, he advocates transgenic treatments from animals to toughen the skin. In his palatial home, he has a private operating theatre where he carries out experimental work on Vera, a beautiful woman he keeps prisoner, who is dressed only in a clinging gauzy, flesh-toned material and whose skin has an unnaturally smooth, flawless look. She appears to submit ecstatically to her imprisonment, but this is finally to be the cause of madness and violence.
As in many of his films, family secrets are revealed through lengthy flashbacks – something forbidden to contemporary Hollywood screenwriters. There is the doppelganger motif, and the younger guy who likes partying and drugs; there are staircase scenes and scenes in which a middle-aged man watches the object of his desire, enraptured, on a large screen. And perhaps most startling, and most characteristic of all, there is Almodóvar’s great theme of transsexual identity, which speaks of passion, fantasy and escape. Plot/Synopsis:
A well respected monk, Capucino Ambrosio compromises himself with his carnal lust for a pupil, a woman disguised as a monk, she tempts the monk to transgress and he is soon found desiring another, the innocent Antonia. Matilda uses magic spells to help the monk in his pursuit of Antonia, whom he later rapes and kills. It later emerges that Matilda is an instrument of Satan in female form. Focus also is also shone on Antonia’s previous relationship with Lorenzo, whose sister is tortured by hyprocritical nuns for her own relationship. Returning to Ambrosio, he is delivered to the Inquisition; escaping only by selling his soul to the devil. The devil prevents Ambrosio’s final repentance, and informs Ambrosio that Antonia is the monk’s sister.
