Plot/Synopsis:
Serbian director Uros Stajanovic’s gender-themed period allegory Charleston and Vendetta unfurls in Pokrp – a rural village in the 1920s-era Balkans – where nearly the entire male population (save one individual) has been decimated by the ravages of war. This leaves untold number of love-starved female residents craving male companionship; when sisters Ognjenka and Boginja accidentally kill off the last male, execution by the other female members of the village is a near certainty.

The siblings receive a second chance, however, in the form of an ultimatum: they must set out on a quest to retrieve one virile male and bring him back to the village. If they can succeed in this task, their lives will be spared. Thus, the women embark on a journey into the surrounding country; en route they happen upon such discoveries as the lusty and lascivious Dance Hall King of Belgrade and an impossibly vain muscleman.

Plot/Synopsis:

This gritty, complex period piece unfurls circa 1914, against the explosive backdrop of the early-World War I Balkans. In a Serbian village on the banks of the Sava River (which constitutes the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), the local population falls into two factions with radically different ideologies: the veterans from prior Balkan conflicts, many of whom are invalids given their war casualties, and the new military recruits – young, strapping and full of vigor. When the Great War formally erupts following the Archduke’s assassination, the new recruits of the village march off to the front lines, leaving the invalids behind; many of those who remain willfully and irresponsibly take sexual advantage of the soldiers’ wives and sisters. News of this reaches the Serbian High Command shortly before the battles commence; in response, he summons the invalids and places them at the front lines, in an attempt to effectively deal with the guilty parties. Meanwhile, an unexpected romance blossoms between an area policeman, his wife, and a Balkan war invalid.

Plot/Synopsis:

Plot/Synopsis:

In 1992, in a small Bosnian village, the Serbian engineer Luka Djuric is building the local railway. He lives in the middle of nowhere with his beloved aspirant soccer player son, Milos, and his annoying former opera singer wife, Jadranka Djuric. After a soccer game, Milos expects to be invited to play in the Partisan’ team, but is called-up to the army. Luka can not believe that a war is beginning in his country and forces his son to join the army. Meanwhile after Milos’ farewell party, Jadranka leaves Luka, traveling away with a musician. When the war reaches the area where Luka lives, Milos is captured alive by the enemy. Later, the Muslim nurse Sabaha is abducted by the Bosnian soldiers and the lieutenant asks the lonely Luka to host her as prisoner because they would try to exchange Milos for Sabaha, who belonged to a wealthy family. As the days go by, Luka and Sabaha fall in love for each other until the day that Jadranka returns and the trade of Milos per Sabaha is accepted.

Srdjan Dragojevic directed this Serbian-French drama about life in war-torn Belgrade, as narrated by teen Pinki (Dusan Pekic). In 1996, a stoned Pinki and his pal Kraut (Milan Maric) speed through Belgrade streets as the city celebrates the war’s conclusion. A flashback travels to the year 1991 when Pinki and Kraut are into petty crimes, masturbation, and girls. They admire Dickie (Dragan Bjelogrlic), who shows them easy cash and sleek cars. Dickie has his girlfriend Suki (Branka Katic) do a sex demo for the teens. Many local toughs turn up on TV’s Street Pulse, hosted by sexy Lidija, and the duo angles for an invite to the show. In 1993, drugs bring on a darker side, evident in full force by 1995. Shown at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival.

Plot/Synopsis:

A bus and a truck are moving towards each other along a two-way traffic highway on a rainy day. At the very beginning we learn that a reckless driver of another car will cause them to collide while trying to pass the bus; we even learn what seats will spell doom for their occupants. The rest of the movie follows two streams of events on the bus and on the truck, getting us to know and like a wide variety of characters, wondering which ones will end up being casualties and holding breath for our favourites. The epilogue brings some more surprises…
