Fantastic Planet (1973)

Fantastic Planet (1973)

IMDB: www.imdb.com/title/tt0070544/
Title: Fantastic Planet
AKA: La Planète Sauvage
Year: 1973
Directed: René Laloux
Genre: Animation / Sci-Fi
Runtime: 1 hour, 11m
Country: France / Czechoslovakia
Language: English

Cast:
Jennifer Drake: Tiwa
Eric Baugin: Terr
Jean Topart: Maître Sinh
Jean Valmont: Terr Adulte

Plot / Synopsis

René Laloux’s mesmerising psychedelic sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and is a landmark of European animation. Based on Stefan Wul’s novel Oms en série [Oms by the dozen], Laloux’s breathtaking vision was released in France as La Planète sauvage [The Savage Planet]; in the USA as Fantastic Planet; and immediately drew comparisons to Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Planet of the Apes (both the 1968 film and Boule’s 1963 novel). Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) due to its palpable political and social concerns, cultivated imagination, and memorable animation techniques.

Fantastic Planet tells the story of Oms, human-like creatures, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called Draags. The story takes place on the Draags’ planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms — and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable.

Widely regarded as an allegorical statement on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, Fantastic Planet was five years in the making at Prague’s Jiri Trnka Studios. The direction of René Laloux, the incredible art of Roland Topor, and Alain Goraguer’s brilliantly complementary score (much sampled by the hip-hop community) all combine to make Fantastic Planet a mind-searing experience.

Plot / Synopsis

This visually inventive French sci-fi/fantasy tale began winning a cult following practically from the moment it was released. Krank is a foul, monstrous creature who lords over the inhabitants of a small island; Krank’s emotional being is every bit as ugly as his physical personage, largely because he does not have the ability to dream. However, he has developed a machine that can drain the dreams of others from their heads, and he devotes himself to kidnapping children from a nearby harbor town so that he can steal their pleasant dreams. Denree (Joseph Lucien) is one of the children who has been spirited off to the island; Krank discovers that he’s an even bigger problem than he imagined when his big brother One, a harpoon-wielding mountain of a man, sets out on a rescue mission. Once he arrives on Krank’s island, One encounters a brain in a fish tank that has learned to talk, a group of clones who can’t decide who is the original, a pair of Siamese twins, an octopus that guides a group of orphaned thieves, and a girl named Miette who says she can guide One to Denree. ~ AMG

Nadesda Blazickova:  Court Dancer
Karel Effa:  Adjutant
Josef Hlinomaz:  Spanish General

Plot / Synopsis

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (aka Baron Prasil) begins with a modern astronaut named Joe arriving on the moon, only to discover that’s he’s already been beaten by the likes of Jules Verne, Baron Munchausen and Cyrano de Bergerac, who toast to the new arrival from their lunar-Victorian dinner table. The baron invites Joe onto his Pegasus-drawn frigate for an interstellar traipse back to terrestrial territory.

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen was Czechoslovakian special-effect master Karel Zeman’s follow-up to The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. Using Gustav Dore paintings as backdrops, Zeman recounts the many mendacious adventures of the boastful Baron. The film opens on the surface of the moon, where a modern-day cosmonaut confronts both Munchausen and another legendary pioneer space traveller, Cyrano de Bergerac. The cosmonaut then joins the Baron for further highlight suspect escapades. Combining live action, stop-motion animation and deliberately unreal backgrounds, The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (original title: Baron Prasil) is a wonderful bouquet to the spirit of imagination–or “the spirit of man”, as the cosmonaut puts it.

Alphaville (France) 1965

Runtime : 1 hour, 39m
Country : France
Language : French
Subtitles : English.srt
Genre : Mystery / Sci-Fi
Director : Jean-Luc Godard
Cast : Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Akim Tamiroff, Valérie Boisgel, Jean-Louis Comolli, Michel Delahaye, Jean-André Fieschi, Christa Lang, Jean-Pierre Léaud,  László Szabó, Howard Vernon
imdb

Synopsis :
Eddie Constantine plays Lemmy Caution, a trenchcoat-wearing secret agent. Constantine had already played this role in dozens of previous films; the character was originally created by British pulp novelist Peter Cheyney. However, in Alphaville, director Jean-Luc Godard moves Caution away from his usual twentieth century setting, and places him in a futuristic sci-fi dystopia, the technocratic dictatorship of Alphaville.

Alphaville is a 1965 black-and-white French science fiction film directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Its original French title is Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (Alphaville, a Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution). The film stars Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Howard Vernon and Akim Tamiroff. The film won the Golden Bear award of the Berlin Film Festival in 1965.

Alphaville combines the genres of dystopian science fiction and film noir. Although set far in the future on another planet, there are no special effects or elaborate sets; instead, the film was shot in real locations in Paris, the night-time streets of the capital becoming the streets of Alphaville, while modernist glass and concrete buildings represent the city’s interiors. In addition, the characters refer to twentieth century events; for example, the hero describes himself as a Guadalcanal veteran.
