Plot/Synopsis:

‘The Witness’ takes place during the height of the Rákosi Era, which was closely modeled after the ruthless and brutal Stalin regime. The film follows the life of an ordinary dike keeper, József Pelikán, who has been caught for illegally slaughtering his pig, Dezso. Instead of doing hard time for his "heinous" crime, Pelikán is elevated into an important position, generally reserved for the communist elite. Of course, Pelikán is utterly clueless about his newfound luck, not to mention his new job. Even his new benefactor, the mysterious Comrade Virág, is reluctant to reveal the real reason behind Pelikán’s preferential treatment. Thus, begins Pelikán’s hilarious adventure deep within the “sophisticated” communist society. One failure after another the incompetent Pelikán is elevated higher and higher on the communist echelon, all the while remaining completely clueless about his promotions. Until one day, when he gets called for to return the “favour” by falsely testifying against his long-time friend in a mock-up show trial.

Plot/Synopsis:

Having suffered as a boy under a brutal Communist-era coach, champion Hungarian gymnast Miklos moves to Calgary years later in search of a new start – only to find himself unwittingly perpetuating the very same cycle of abuse. Redemption appears in the unlikely form of Kyle, a troubled young Canadian teen with the potential to become a world champion, and the friendship and rivalry between teacher and student – each played by actual gymnasts – forms the basis of this gripping, uncommonly resonant sports drama. Beautifully shot and edited, effortlessly evoking its respective time-periods, and through them, the clash of different cultures and values.

One does not have to be a gymnastics fan to like this movie, but if one is, then the scenes of practice and competition are a real bonus.

The actor in the main role of Dongo (Zoltan Miklos Hajdu) is the director’s brother and a professional gymnast.

Brutal at times, this movie shows how over the years abuse is handed down from one to another.

Plot/Synopsis:

Directed by Kornel Mundruczo, Szep Napok (“Pleasant Days”) is a grim slife-of-life piece that follows the lives of siblings Peter (Tamas Polgar), who is recently out of prison, and Maria (Kata Weber), a beautiful young woman whose lover neglects her. Maria (Weber) works in a laundromat, often finding herself preoccupied with the problems of Maja (Orsolya Toth), her pregnant best friend who eventually gives birth on the laundromat’s floor. In hopes of blackmailing her lover into commitment, Maria agrees to take the baby and pretend that she is the mother. Peter (Tamas Polgar) is the only person outside of Maria and Maja who knows the truth, and becomes attracted to Maja, who is busy avoiding her fiercely possessive ex-boyfriend. Eventually, Maja wants to take the child back, but Maria refuses to comply. Forced to choose between his sister and Maja, Peter makes a decision with tragic consequences.

Plot/Synopsis:

Some of the most symbolic moments of the 1956 Revolution in Hungary were the tooth-and-nail battles fought by the so-called ‘Pest Lads’ who dared to defy odds by taking on the panzers of one of the world’s superpowers. The story begins on October 23rd, 1956 and ends on November 4th of the same year. Juli is Totya’s girlfriend but also loves Gábor. Their love triangle will have to endure the trials and tribulations of these stirring times. A group of boys living in the outskirts of the capital are playing football in abandoned lot when Juli, a ticket inspector, brings news of protests breaking out in the city. Only Gábor accompanies her into town and together they become part of this historical event. At dawn, when the boys too come under fire from Soviet forces, they decide to join in the fight. Under Totya’s leadership, they grab some guns and build a barricade around a small cinema. With only guns and gasoline at their disposal, they stand their ground against the encroaching Soviet tanks.

Plot/Synopsis:

This story takes place in a small town on the Hungarian Plain. In a provincial town, which is surrounded with nothing else but frost. It is bitterly cold weather – without snow. Even in this bewildered cold hundreds of people are standing around the circus tent, which is put up in the main square, to see – as the outcome of their wait – the chief attraction, the stuffed carcass of a real whale. The people are coming from everywhere. From the neighboring settlings, even from quite far away parts of the country. They are following this clumsy monster as a dumb, faceless, rag-wearing crowd. This strange state of affairs – the appearance of the foreigners, the extreme frost – disturbs the order of the small town. Aambitious personages of the story feel they can take advantage of this situation. The tension growing to the unbearable is brought to explosion by the figure of the Prince, who is pretending facelessness. Even his mere appearance is enough to break loose destructive emotions…
