Plot/Synopsis:
The Pillars of the Earth is set against a backdrop of war, religious strife and power struggles which tears lives and families apart. In that time, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against the backdrop, love-stories entwine: Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, the sadistic Lord William, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone work and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age. Follett masterfully weaves these stories through political turmoil of 12th century England, creating a relevant and viable world for today’s audience and for generations to come.

András is about the get married to the daughter of King Jaroslav, Anastasia, when he hears about the uproar against Peter of Orseolo. He goes back to his homeland, supported by Kiev forces to fight Peter, but suffers a humiliating defeat, since both the Emperor and Rome fails to fulfill their previous promises to send troops helping his cause. Yet, out of the blue, he is unexpectedly helped out by the so-called “black hungarians”, descendents of the old tribal leaders, commanded by his brother Levente and Vata, who ask from András the right to practice their old religion in return for their help. András gives his word, but not much later is forced to forsake with vow to gain the support of the imperial and papal forces, too, thus betraying Levente and all the people who supported his victorious fight. Hell is on the loose, the Hungarians of the old ways are hunted as prey. Suffering from bad conscience András is roaming in the Pilis forest to find Levente hoping to explain himself and the reasons for his actions. He doesnt know that unwillingly though, but he also leads the Royal Guard to his brother’s hiding place. But Shamaness Rasdi, wife of Levente performs a miracle and leads her forsaken people to the mystical Land of the Light. Only Levente stays behind to claim the Ancient Sword of Power to himself from the undeserving András.

The speed with which the rhetorically gifted demagogue manages to assemble whole crowds of friends and followers around him – including above all his “protectress”, the enigmatic Russian woman Angelika – is reflected in the speed at which he succeeds in attracting enemies from church and state. His love for the beautiful Eleonora, the daughter of a middle-class family, studying medicine at the University of Geneva – a city where Mussolini himself has been carrying stone around as an unskilled worker – even convinces him to take up studying. Oskar Huliczka … Musician playing a horn
Joanna Litwin … Marijken Bruegel

Plot/Synopsis:
Lech Majewski directed this visually striking examination of the nexus between art and politics in the 16th century. In 1564, the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel created one of his best-known and most controversial works, “The Procession to Calvary,” in which Christ, carrying his cross, makes his way to his own crucifixion though a crowded landscape that features representations of hundreds of historic and contemporary figures. The painting was a biting commentary on political matters of the day as well as a satiric view of religion, and in The Mill & the Cross, Majewski re-creates the making of Bruegel’s masterpiece, as the artist (played by Rutger Hauer) stages the images and explains their meanings while we learn more about the individuals depicted and the people who posed for the work, many of whom have their own stories to tell. Using digital imaging technology, The Mill & the Cross allows viewers to enter into Bruegel’s painting as the static figures come to life. ~ Mark Deming, Allrovi

Plot/Synopsis:
The remarkable life of one of France’s most influential leaders is dramatized in this stylish historical drama. In 16th Century France, political power walks hand in hand with religion as the Royal Family are devout Catholics and Huguenots (early Protestants) are treated as second-class citizens. Henry is a Huguenot military leader who has become a hero in Navarre, a territory in Southwest France, and as Nostradamus predicts a remarkable future for him, he is introduced to Catherine de’ Medici, the Catholic queen of France. Catherine clearly holds power over feeble-minded King Charles IX, and she is keen on holding on to her position by seeing her sons go on to rule the nation. But as the Huguenots become restless and Henry looks to be the potential leader of a revolt, Catherine arranges a marriage between Henry and her daughter Margot, certain the alliance will stop the budding conflict. But the nuptials only leads to the infamous St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre as Catholics attack Huguenots, leading to the death of thirty thousand people. Henry is captured by the Queen’s army but escapes to lead the Huguenots in a war against the throne; while Henry is forced to resort to violent means, his goal is to end the fighting by establishing religious freedom and ending faith-based rule in France. ~ Mark Deming, Allrovi
