Plot/Synopsis:

Plot/Synopsis:
The life of Imre Nagy is the history of the 20th century. He was the first communist leader who – as the living symbol and prime minister of the 1956. Hungarian national revolution – broke with the Warsaw Pact and stood his ground in favour of democracy based on a variety of political parties instead of only one. A lot of people think, though, that his role in 1956 and his following imprisonment until his death is not a clear consequence of his previous life, his communist ideals, and his experiences in Moscow – and thus suspect that some kind of extraordinary secret could have got hold of him.

Plot/Synopsis:
Hungarian filmmaker István Szabó’s moving drama concerns the occupants of an old house who gather on the eve of its demolition to reflect on their lives from World War II to the present. Among the residents are Mrs. Gaskoy (Rita Bekes), a baker’s wife who hid people from the Nazis in the house’s attic, and Maria (Lucyna Winnicka), who remembers her wartime arrest. Plot/Synopsis:
This German TV movie plays in the years 1414 and 1415 in Konstanz, Germany. Its story hails from a novel by Iny Lorentz with the same title. It is gripping and credibly presented. In spite of the relatively low budget of a TV production the settings look authentic, the acting is mostly excellent, and you have to excuse the somewhat artificial dialogues that are typical for German TV movies. The story moves from the house of a wealthy textile trader to a medieval jail, then to the travelling whores, to medieval pubs, and eventually into the houses of the gentry and to the king. Finally our heroine sets out to close the circle and move home. It is a grand story that has the potential to draw you in, that really needs all of the two hours to be told, and that is too rich to allow any slowness. ~ IMDb
