Plot/Synopsis:

The harrowing true story of how French police rounded up civilian Jews living in Paris in order to send 13,000 men, women and children to their deaths at Auschwitz is given an accurate, sometimes wrenching and occasionally overly theatrical treatment in The Round Up (La Rafle). Demonstrating exactly how French authorities pandered to the Nazis, this ambitious period drama boasts a prestige cast that should help draw local audiences to an uncomfortable subject.

Producer Ilan Goldman, who gambled and won on La Vie En Rose, has taken on a difficult slice of French history. Apart from 1973’s Les Guichets du Louvre (Black Thursday) and Joseph Losey’s Monsieur Klein, dramatic attempts to address the so-called Vel d’Hiv roundup of July 16, 1942 are virtually non-existent. Not unlike Andrzej Wajda’s Katyn, which set the record straight about another wartime travesty long ignored, The Round Up doggedly relates the morning raid and its aftermath in human terms.

Interred in a concentration camp, Strasberg is befriended by the camp’s kindly doctor, who helps her hide her true identity and work as a camp guard, or “kapo.” Unfortunately, Strasberg’s new found power goes to her head, and her abuse of that power is very nearly on the same level as the Nazis. Brought down to earth by the death of a close friend, Strasberg spearheads an escape attempt, sacrificing her own life in the process. Nominated for a best foreign picture Oscar in 1960, Kapo nonetheless did not find an American distributor until 1964.

Anne-Marie Daehli… Inger Munch – 1875
Johan Halsborg … Dr. Christian Munch – 1884
Gro Jarto … Laura Catherine Munch – 1884

Plot/Synopsis:

Following a rough chronology from 1884 to 1894, when Norwegian artist Edvard Munch began expressionism and established himself as northern Europe’s most maligned and controversial artist, the film also flashes back to the death from consumption of his mother, when he was five, his sister’s death, and his near death at 13 from pulmonary disease. The film finds enduring significance in Munch’s brief affair with “Mrs. Heiberg” and his participation in the café society of anarchist Hans Jaeger in Christiania and later in Berlin with Strindberg. Through it all comes Munch’s melancholy and his desire to render on canvas, cardboard, paper, stone, and wood his innermost feelings.

Famously described by the late Ingmar Bergman as ‘a work of genius’, Peter Watkins’ multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter, it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch’s formative years in late 19th century Kristiania (now Oslo), Watkins uses his trademark style to create a vivid picture of the emotional, political, and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art.

The young artist (Geir Westby) has an affair with ‘Mrs. Heiberg’ (Gro Fraas), a devastating experience that will haunt him for the rest of his life. His work is viciously attacked by critics and public alike and he is forced to leave his home country for Berlin, where, along with the notorious Swedish playwright August Strindberg, he becomes part of the cultural storm that is to sweep Europe.

There have been countless film biographies of famous artists, but only a handful can be considered major works in their own right. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins’ extended 221-minute version, originally made for television.

In a complex interweaving of drama, history and allegory, this Greek film tells the story of the tours of a theatrical troupe along the Greek isles between 1939 and 1952. In each town, the troupe enacts the play “Golfo the Shepherdess.” Simultaneously, an actress in the troupe is searching for a way to exact vengeance against her mother whom she believes was responsible for the death of her father. Her brother, a resistance fighter, helps her accomplish this. This level of the story re-creates, in “real life,” the classical Greek drama of the Orestaia. At the same time, Greece is fully embroiled in the Second World War, political struggles, and its own Civil War. This film exists in several versions: the one which is 230 minutes long is the original, preferred version.

She immediately assigned to an urgent mission: the rescue of a British agent who has fallen into German hands while preparing for D-Day on the Normandy beaches. The man hasn’t talked yet, but there is no time to lose. Louise must first put together an all-female commando unit. She will stop at nothing to get exactly the right women for the mission’s special requirements, even if it means lying, blackmailing or securing pardons for serving prisons.

Suze (Marie Gillain) is a showgirl who excels in the art of seduction. Gaelle (Deborah Francois) is a chemist and explosive expert. And Jeanne (Julie Depardieu) is a prostitute who has already killed in cold blood. Parachuted into Normandy, they are joined by Maria (Maya Sansa) a Jewish Italian radio operator and the final member of the team. The mission begins well but there are soon complications. Their SOE bosses give the women a new, almost suicidal objective: they must move on to eliminate Colonel Heindrich (Moritz Bleibtrey), the head of Nazi counter-intelligence, who has gleaned too much information about the Landings.

A massive six-hour biopic of Napoleon, tracing his career from his schooldays (where a snowball fight is staged like a military campaign), his flight from Corsica, through the French Revolution (where a real storm is intercut with a political storm) and the Terror, culminating in his triumphant invasion of Italy in 1797 (the film stops there because it was intended to be part one of six, but director Abel Gance never raised the money to make the other five). The film’s legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.

Plot/Synopsis:

In 1982, legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda fled his homeland and relocated in France to direct this powerful story about the ethical boundaries of power and leadership, which had many parallels to Poland’s volatile political situation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Danton (Gérard Depardieu) and Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak) were close friends and fought together in the French Revolution, but by 1793 Robespierre was France’s ruler, determined to wipe out opposition with a series of mass executions that became known as the Reign of Terror. Danton, well known as a spokesman of the people, had been living in relative solitude in the French countryside, but he returned to Paris to challenge Robespierre’s violent rule and call for the people to demand their rights. Robespierre, however, could not accept such a challenge, even from a friend and colleague, and he blocked out a plan for the capture and execution of Danton and his allies. Wajda remained in France until 1989, when the collapse of Communist rule made it possible for him to return to his homeland.
