Plot/Synopsis:

In a complex interweaving of drama, history and allegory, this Greek film tells the story of the tours of a theatrical troupe along the Greek isles between 1939 and 1952. In each town, the troupe enacts the play “Golfo the Shepherdess.” Simultaneously, an actress in the troupe is searching for a way to exact vengeance against her mother whom she believes was responsible for the death of her father. Her brother, a resistance fighter, helps her accomplish this. This level of the story re-creates, in “real life,” the classical Greek drama of the Orestaia. At the same time, Greece is fully embroiled in the Second World War, political struggles, and its own Civil War. This film exists in several versions: the one which is 230 minutes long is the original, preferred version.

Subtitles: English (srt)| Polish (txt)
Genre: Drama

Director: Angeliki Antoniou

Cast:
Eshref Durmishi … Eduart
André Hennicke … Christoph
Ndriçim Xhepa … Raman
Ermela Teli … Natasha
Adrian Aziri … Elton
Gazmend Gjokaj … Pedro
Manos Vakousis … Giorgos Harisis
Edi Mehana … Ali

Plot/Synopsis:

Based upon true events Eduart, a young man raised in a cruel and oppressive family environment, leaves Albania with the dream of becoming a rock star and living a better life. His reckless character and the passions of his youth lead him to commit a murder in Athens. Chased by everyone, even by his own self, he is imprisoned under the harshest conditions. Eduart, with the help of a German doctor, learns to feel sympathy for others and guilt for his crime. His deep remorse will lead him from darkness to light.

Eshref Durmishi plays Eduart with supporting actors Ermela Teli as Eduart’s sister, Ndricim Xhepa as his army general father who turns him in for robbery and Adrian Aziri as a kind inmate.

Cinematographer Jürgen Jürges, who has filmed some of Fassbinder and Haneke’s most important films, brings an understated look of grace to the film that perfectly matches Antoniou’s subdued tone, while editor Takis Yannopoulos (Nyfes (Brides)) strings all the scenes together here with a nice forward momentum but without haste.

The Greek-German co-production was named the Best Greek Film at the 2006 Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Genre: Drama

Hristos Passalis … Son
Anna Kalaitzidou … Christina
Alexander Voulgaris … Dog trainer

Plot/Synopsis:

Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence ‘the sea’ refers to a large armchair and ‘zombies’ are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the uber-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission. The father is the only family member who can leave the manicured lawns of their self-inflicted exile, earning their keep by managing a nearby factory, while the only outsider allowed on the premises is his colleague Christina, who is paid to relieve the son of his male urges. Tired of these dutiful acts of carnality, Christina enlists the elder daughter for some girl-on-girl action, carelessly disturbing the domestic balance. Soon enough, sex has spread throughout the household like fire. Next stop: rebellion

Robert Hedengren … Valkokaartilainen
Viktor Idman … Valkokaartilainen
Miska Kaukonen … Valkokaartilainen
Ilkka Heiskanen … Frans Rapola
Riitta Salminen … Saara Rapola

Plot/Synopsis:

The film, based on a popular novel by Leena Lander, is set in April 1918, at the end of the Finnish Civil War, when Red and White soldiers were fighting each other, much like their neighbors to the east in Russia. There were many female soldiers fighting for the Red army, and the film begins with a platoon of women being captured by the savage White army. The women are raped and executed, but one of them, the strong-willed Miina (Pihla Viitala), survives thanks to the intercession of one of the few soldiers with a conscience, the handsome Aaro (Samuli Vauramo). As he escorts her to the closest garrison for trial, Aaro falls in love with her; Miina encourages his ardor, though she has been so brutalized by her wartime experience that it’s hard to know if she’s capable of any real feeling.

At the garrison, they both come under the scrutiny of the judge (Eero Aho) in charge of the fort, a decadent dandy who still dresses formally in the stark wartime setting and turns out to be a voyeur who loves playing games with his captives. These characters exhibit the complexities found in a richly imagined novel. In addition, the film has been given an epic visual sweep by director Aku Louhimies. The desolate settings are beautifully caught, and scenes portraying the horrors of war are powerfully graphic without being exploitative. Louhimies also builds considerable erotic tension in more intimate scenes.

Given the cruelty of the times, a happy ending is unlikely, yet the conclusion is somehow satisfying, holding out a glimmer of hope for at least a couple of the characters. Fine performances all around help to intensify our involvement. This is a rare historical drama that lingers in the memory as it eloquently underscores the devastating human costs of every war.
