Plot / Synopsis

A would-be novelist with no ideas of his own mines the tragedies of an unsuspecting woman to his advantage in this drama. Robert (Ulrich Matthes) is a college professor and struggling writer living in Konstanz, a town in Southern Germany. Robert has been working on a novel for years, but beyond a rough idea about life in Germany before the Berlin Wall came down, he has no worthwhile ideas and doesn’t have much to show for his efforts; as Robert edges into his mid-forties, he’s begun to worry his literary career will never get off the ground. Robert happens to meet a young woman named Inga (Anna Maria Muehe) who was raised by her grandparents after her mother died soon after she was born; Robert senses there’s something in her story that would make for a good novel, and he begins drawing her out, trying to find out more about her and her childhood that he can use as source material for his book. As Robert digs deeper, it becomes clear he’s learned a few things about Inga’s past that she doesn’t know — and not everything she’s been told about her mother is the truth. Novemberkind (aka November Child) was the first feature film from writer and director Christian Schwochow.

The Fabulous Baron Munchausenl (1961)

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Fantasy/Romance/Sci-Fi/War
Runtime: 1 hour, 20m
Country: Czechoslovakia
Language: Germany
Subtitles: Czech

IMDB: Baron Prásil

Jana Brejchová:  Princess Bianca

Nadesda Blazickova:  Court Dancer
Karel Effa:  Adjutant
Josef Hlinomaz:  Spanish General

Plot / Synopsis

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (aka Baron Prasil) begins with a modern astronaut named Joe arriving on the moon, only to discover that’s he’s already been beaten by the likes of Jules Verne, Baron Munchausen and Cyrano de Bergerac, who toast to the new arrival from their lunar-Victorian dinner table. The baron invites Joe onto his Pegasus-drawn frigate for an interstellar traipse back to terrestrial territory.

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen was Czechoslovakian special-effect master Karel Zeman’s follow-up to The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. Using Gustav Dore paintings as backdrops, Zeman recounts the many mendacious adventures of the boastful Baron. The film opens on the surface of the moon, where a modern-day cosmonaut confronts both Munchausen and another legendary pioneer space traveller, Cyrano de Bergerac. The cosmonaut then joins the Baron for further highlight suspect escapades. Combining live action, stop-motion animation and deliberately unreal backgrounds, The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (original title: Baron Prasil) is a wonderful bouquet to the spirit of imagination–or “the spirit of man”, as the cosmonaut puts it.

Käthe Haack: Baronin Münchhausen

Plot / Synopsis

In early 1943, just as Nazi Germany began its collapse with the surrender at Stalingrad, the famed Ufa Studios released an elaborate super-spectacle to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary. Produced at the enormous cost of 6.5 million Reichsmarks, and filmed in Agfacolor, Munchhausen was the bizarre Nazi response to such extravaganzas as Britain’s The Thief of Bagdad and Hollywood’s The Wizard of Oz, both of which were jealously admired by Propaganda Minister Goebbels. Starring Hans Albers, the hypnotic, blond superstar (who kept a Jewish lover safely in London), and a bevy of female stars, the film was meant to divert a German public, and those in occupied Europe, then experiencing aerial bombardment as well as extensive military casualties.

This lavish, impudent, adult fairy tale takes the viewer from 18th-century Braunschweig to St. Petersburg, Constantinople, Venice, and then to the moon using ingenious special effects, stunning location shooting, and a rich color palette, supervised by cameraman Konstantin Irmen-Tschet, who had worked for Fritz Lang in earlier Ufa films. Escaping the grim reality of the time with the illusion of luxury and pure fantasy (and a lovely score by Georg Haentzschel), Munchhausen daringly glorifies a braggart and liar, and was scripted by the banned Jewish author Erich Kustner under a pseudonym. The Nazi censors deemed the film ‘artistically’ but not ‘politically’ valuable; perhaps the sight of a man-hungry Catherine the Great (Brigitte Horney), topless harem girls, and a vacation-pretty Venetian Grand Canal in glorious color were thought a bit rich for audiences under grim wartime restrictions.

Plot / Synopsis

M is a 1931 German drama-thriller directed by Fritz Lang and written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou. It was Lang’s first sound film, although he had directed over a dozen films previously, including Metropolis. Over the years the film has become a defining classic that rivals Lang’s other works for the title of magnum opus. Lang himself maintained that this film was his finest work.[1][2] The lead, Peter Lorre, was typecast for years after the film’s release as a villain for his portrayal of a child murderer. M also pioneered the use of leitmotif to give the film score a more intense feel.

M is allegedly based on the real-life case of serial killer Peter Kürten, the “Vampire of Düsseldorf”, whose crimes of the 1920s were still recent enough to resonate in the viewer’s mind when the film debuted,[3] although Lang fervently denied that he drew from this case.[4] A police psychiatrist in the film cites serial killers Fritz Haarmann and Karl Grossmann as examples of how such criminals can conceal themselves in everyday society.

Lorre’s climactic speech was appropriated by Joseph Goebbels for The Eternal Jew, a Nazi propaganda film that blames Jews for devaluing German culture with “degenerate” art. Because Lorre was Jewish, the film uses his final speech as “proof” that Jews exemplify innate criminality, and refuse to take responsibility for their wrongdoings. Ironically, Lorre was one of Goebbels’ favorite actors.
