A much beloved comedy, Mimino tells the story of a Soviet Georgian helicopter pilot who is called Mimino, which means “falcon” in that language.
He is ambitious to become an international airline pilot and goes to Moscow and, with the help of an old friend, tries to get a job as an international pilot. In his Moscow hotel, he meets Suren, an Armenian, and despite the supposed historical antipathy of Georgians and Armenians, they become friends. They have both pretended to be participants in a seminar on endocrinology in order to get rooms at the hotel where the seminar is being held.
He has a lot of wild adventures with Suren, and on his own. Much of the comedy pits ordinary people such as Mimino, who is from the countryside, against the haughty sophisticates of Moscow.
Popular Georgian singer Vakhtang Kikabidze, who performs the title role, sang a song within the film which became a Soviet hit. This film won the Grand Prize from the 1978 Moscow International Film Festival, the State Prize of the USSR, and also a prize from the All-Union Film Festival. ~ Clarke Fountain, Allrovi

Plot/Synopsis:
A family is forced into deception for the sake of their matriarch in this poignant drama.

Three generations of women share a tiny apartment in Tbilisi, a Georgia city that has been devastated by war, political instability, and a ruined economy. Eka is an elderly woman whose health is failing, but her will remains strong and she holds sway over the household. Eka’s daughter, Marina, is a middle-aged woman who is still dealing with the devastating circumstances of her childhood and the death of her husband. And Marina’s daughter, Ada, is a college student who feels trapped by her circumstances and abraded by her lack of privacy; she has a lover, but since she must share a bed with her mother, they can only make love in his car.

The light of Eka’s life is her son, Otar, who has fled Tbilisi and lives in Paris. Otar writes frequently and sends money as often as he can, and while Marina resents her mother’s obvious favoritism toward her brother, she and Ada realize how important his letters are to her.

While Eka is visiting friends, Marina and Ada receive devastating news — Otar has died in Paris, and since he wasn’t carrying his visa when his body was found, he’s been buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave. Afraid this news would be a severe blow to Eka’s poor health, Marina doesn’t tell her mother what has happened, and Ada begins writing letters as Otar to maintain the illusion that he’s alive. The ruse works well enough until Eka announces she’s raised enough money by selling her possessions to visit her son in France.

Repentance (1984)

Ketevan Abuladze … Nino Barateli

Nano Ochigava … Ketevan as a child
Boris Tsipuria
Akaki Khidasheli
Leo (Levan) Antadze
Rezo Esadze
Mzia Makhviladze
Amiran Amiranashvili

Plot/Synopsis:
Repentance features Avtandil Makharadze in a dual role.
As Georgian mayor Varlam Aravidze, Makharadze is a strutting, arbitrarily cruel dictator, something of a composite Stalin and Hitler. Visually he very closely resembles Lavrentiy Beriya, Stalin’s right hander and one-time KGB chief.
As Abel, the mayor’s son, Makharadze finds himself in the middle of an ideological squabble when his father dies.
Ketevan Barateli, a local woman who had suffered mightily under the mayor’s regime, refuses to allow the old man’s corpse to be interred. Despite the son’s Herculean efforts, Barateli continues digging up the late mayor’s body, a symbolic gesture to prevent the dead man’s villainy from being forgotten.
Repentance was the first Soviet film that openly denounced the horrors of Stalinism, though the Georgian director Tengiz Abuladze (known for his poetic and surrealist films) chose to make it allegorical, deliberately using anachronisms and making the leading character look like a combination of Stalin’s henchman Lavrenti Beriya, Hitler, and Mussolini. An interesting point — the last name chosen for the leading character is totally fictional, there is no such name as Aravidze in Georgia. In fact, “aravi” means “nobody” in Georgian. The filmmakers opted for such a name in order not to offend any real person in the Republic of Georgia.
Filmed in 1984, Repentance fell victim to Soviet censorship from the moment it left the editing room. When it was finally released in 1987, the film was deservedly garlanded with several awards, including the Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Prize. ~ Hal Erickson, Allmovie

It is a cult film, especially in post-Soviet countries, and its humorous dialogue is frequently quoted.
The story takes place on the desert planet “Pluke” in the “Kin-dza-dza” galaxy, where two Soviet humans previously unknown to each other (“Uncle Vova”, a gruff construction foreman from Moscow, and “The Fiddler”, a student from Georgia) are stranded due to an accidental encounter with an alien teleportation device. The Legend of the Suram Fortress (1984)

M. Abaishvili
Leila Alibegashvilli … Young Vardo
G. Ambartsumov

Plot/Synopsis:

Directors Sergei Paradzhanov and Dodo Abashidze resurrected an old Soviet Georgian folktale as the basis for their film The Legend of Suram Fortress. The fortress in question is forever under construction, and forever collapsing before the last brick can be laid. The advice of a fortuneteller is sought out; the young fellow sent out to seek this advice happens to be the son of a man who years earlier had jilted the fortuneteller. Out of pique, she tells him that he must be walled up in the fortress’ wall, else the structure will continue to tumble. So many ancient legends are based upon self-sacrifice that one would think that The Legend of Suram Fortress would have nothing new to offer — and one would be quite unfair to this well-crafted film to think along those lines. Never as brilliant as the critics made it out to be, Suram Fortress is still an immensely satisfying work from a gifted filmmaking team.
