Plot/Synopsis:

A family drama about unfortunate brothers who are a Finnish version of Cain and Abel. Eighteen year old Rupert still suffers from the nightmares of what his abusive father made him do when he was little. To him, his father is a curse. To his younger brother Evert, however, father is still father. Trouble and conflict slowly brews between the brothers with contrasting characters, and the situation climaxes to a tragedy even Rupert does not want.

Plot/Synopsis:

Finnish filmmaker Lenka Hellstedt makes her directorial debut with the comedy drama Mina ja Morrison, based on a novel by Kata Karkkainen. Irina Bjorklund plays Milla, a young woman who becomes romantically involved with Aki (Samuli Edelmann). After spending the night together, Milla discovers that Aki is a widower and single father to Joonas (Roope Karisto). Plot/Synopsis:

The film begins with an unnamed man arriving by train to Helsinki. After falling asleep in a park, he is mugged and beaten by hoodlums and is severely injured in the head, losing consciousness. He awakes and wanders back to the train station and collapses in its bathroom. He awakes the second time in a hospital and finds that he has lost his memory. He starts his life from scratch, living in container dwellings, finding clothes with help from the Salvation Army and making friends with the poor.

He wanders into the outskirts of Helsinki with his face wrapped like an escapee from a classic horror film. A destitute family helps nurse him back to health and a Salvation Army worker named Irma helps him get a job. Though bureaucrats and policemen who can’t seem to cope with this amnesiac’s lack of established identity, the amnesiac plants potatoes, manages a rock & roll band, and romances Irma as he builds a new self. Kaurismaki weaves his movies out of small details and careful, cautious steps forward–but by the end, The Man Without a Past has become a rich, engrossing, and very funny portrait of the possibilities of life.

Plot/Synopsis:

After fighting the communists in Finland, Max Manus returns to Norway, currently occupied by the Nazis. He joins with the Norwegian resistance movement in their fight against the Germans but is arrested. He manages to escape to Scotland where he receives training before being sent back to Norway to carry out various sabotage missions against the occupational force.Returning to Norway with his friend Gregers Gram, his first mission is an attack on German supply ships. He is spectacularly successful, and soon he becomes a special target for the Gestapo commander Siegfried Wolfgang Fehmer. Manus, however, avoids capture, and with Gram and Gunnar Sønsteby he forms the so-called ‘Oslo-group’.Stockholm becomes a meeting point for Norwegians in allied military service. Here Gram introduces Manus to Tikken, who works as a Norwegian contact for the British consulate. The two soon develop a special relationship.As the war becomes more and more brutal, many of Manus’ friends lose their lives in the struggle against the Germans, and he starts to blame himself for being the one who survives. In a meeting with Fehmer he realises that everybody is a victim of the meaninglessness of war.

Plot/Synopsis:

The film, based on a popular novel by Leena Lander, is set in April 1918, at the end of the Finnish Civil War, when Red and White soldiers were fighting each other, much like their neighbors to the east in Russia. There were many female soldiers fighting for the Red army, and the film begins with a platoon of women being captured by the savage White army. The women are raped and executed, but one of them, the strong-willed Miina (Pihla Viitala), survives thanks to the intercession of one of the few soldiers with a conscience, the handsome Aaro (Samuli Vauramo). As he escorts her to the closest garrison for trial, Aaro falls in love with her; Miina encourages his ardor, though she has been so brutalized by her wartime experience that it’s hard to know if she’s capable of any real feeling.

At the garrison, they both come under the scrutiny of the judge (Eero Aho) in charge of the fort, a decadent dandy who still dresses formally in the stark wartime setting and turns out to be a voyeur who loves playing games with his captives. These characters exhibit the complexities found in a richly imagined novel. In addition, the film has been given an epic visual sweep by director Aku Louhimies. The desolate settings are beautifully caught, and scenes portraying the horrors of war are powerfully graphic without being exploitative. Louhimies also builds considerable erotic tension in more intimate scenes.

Given the cruelty of the times, a happy ending is unlikely, yet the conclusion is somehow satisfying, holding out a glimmer of hope for at least a couple of the characters. Fine performances all around help to intensify our involvement. This is a rare historical drama that lingers in the memory as it eloquently underscores the devastating human costs of every war.

Synopsis :
Two brothers, part of a border-recognition treaty detachment after a very long war, confront and deal with the wartime acts of brutality and violence of the older brother. The older brother has been part of this war for 25 years; the younger brother has been studying to become a professor and has been comparatively sheltered from the horrors. The younger brother comes face to face with his older brother’s moral deterioration, and, disturbed by the older brother’s acts of war, eventually persuades (and forces) the older brother to completely atone for those actions. The amount of spookiness achieved with no special effects other than blood, is truly remarkable, and a lesson for Hollywood. And in the end, the viewer is left with an uncertainty as to who must pay for sins, and why, and whether anyone, ever, is truly innocent.
