Plot/Synopsis:
Writer-director Jacob (Jens Albinus) is struggling to finish the script of his latest film just days before it goes into production, while he and his wife Helena (Marijana Jankovic) are on the verge of adopting a little boy from Eastern Europe. Helena is worried that something will go wrong with the final stage of the adoption but Jacob reassures her that everything will be fine.
In a parallel story, a young man of Arab descent, Ali (Igor Rado), is recruited by the Danish army to work as an interpreter in Iraq, leaving behind his anxious girlfriend Mira (Ozlem Saglanmak). Ali too tells Mira that there is nothing to worry about.

Nine years after the release of his acknowledged masterpiece, Ordet, Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer offered this a story of an individual in search of a measure of personal peace and serenity, which proved to be his last completed film. Gertrud Kanning, like the maid Joan in Dreyer’s best-known film, La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, is a woman in isolation. On the eve of her husband’s appointment to a cabinet minister post, she announces that she is leaving their loveless marriage. But her younger lover Erland Jansson, a concert pianist, is more interested in keeping their affair illicit than in continuing it in the open. Gertrud’s old lover, the poet Gabriel Lidman, offers more than his friendship, but she holds back from turning to him, instead choosing to live out her life in solitude rather than compromise with love again. Adapted from a 1920s play by Hjalmar Soberberg, Gertrud plays out in long takes, with few close-ups and exterior scenes. Though initial critical reaction to the film was largely unfavorable, its reputation has steadily grown, especially considered in the context of Dreyer’s long career.

Plot/Synopsis:
Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Day of Wrath (Vredens Dag) is set in 1623 Denmark, where Anne Pedersdotter (Lisbeth Movin), the second wife of a Danish pastor, grows to loathe her husband for his self-asceticism and instead falls in love with the minister’s son – with whom she spends an inordinate amount of time. Locals overhear her wishing aloud for her husband’s death; when he dies of a stroke not long after, she is accused of witchcraft, a charge taken seriously enough to be punishable by death. Eventually, the poor woman is tortured and traumatized to such a point that she actually believes she is a witch – and she gives in to being burned at the stake. Yet Dreyer then shifts the perspective from internalized – illustrating the woman’s paralyzing fear – to externalized, a point of view that enables the director to depict his subject’s spiritual purification. Even allowing for the aura of raw terror, Dreyer never loses sight of the eroticism inherent in the concept of witchcraft. Based on a play by Wiers Jensen, Day of Wrath was filmed during the Nazi occupation of Denmark and not released abroad until after the war, and the director reportedly had to flee his native country when he angered the government with the film’s political content.

Now in his fifties, Vagn leads a solitary life and plays football with a group of similarly aged men, some even older. A bunch of 15-year-olds in Viborg make their first experiences with love, kissing and sexuality, coming together and drifting apart. A career criminal stumbles upon his big chance to get out of the business, though not everyone thinks it’s such a good idea, in this witty thriller. Torkild (Soren Pilmark) is the leader of a band of small-time crooks; having just celebrated his 40th birthday (which coincided with his being dumped by his girlfriend), Torkild is looking to land a big score so he can get out of the business. While trying to map out a major heist, a guy known as the Man From Faro (Peter Anderson) approaches Torkild with a job — he needs someone to steal a bag for him. Torkild and his cronies are up for the job, but they soon discover that a team of security guards is on hand to make sure the bag isn’t stolen, and one of Torkild’s friends is wounded in a shootout. After they’ve made their getaway, Torkild discovers why everyone was fighting over the bag — it contains over four million kroner ($500,000 in American currency) — and he and his partners decide they’re not keen on turning it over to the Man From Faro. After their car breaks down, Torkild and company happen upon an old restaurant that’s up for sale, and they decide to use their newfound wealth to buy it and go into business — which would be complicated enough without the arrival of the Man From Faro, who wants to know what happened to the money he hired Torkild to steal. Blinkende Lygter also stars Iben Hjejle, who gained the attention of American audiences as John Cusack’s love interest in the film High Fidelity.

Plot/Synopsis:
This drama looks into the life of French painter Paul Gauguin. Donald Sutherland plays Gauguin as he struggles through a few years in the 1890s in Montmartre after he has come back from his first stay in Tahiti. His new and radical painting style is not amenable to easy acceptance, as witnessed by August Strindberg’s rejection of it here. The best segments of this film show the artist at work and talking with his friends, other less successful moments show him in amorous liaisons or in one case, in a fight sequence. Most of all, his dedication to his artistic vision as well as the depth of his personality are elements which maintain interest throughout, in a large part due to Sutherland’s insightful portrayal of the artist.

Sara Dahl (Rosalinde Mynster) is seventeen years old and has been raised in a family of strict Jehovah’s Witnesses. Sara follows the tenets of the faith and often joins her family to distribute church literature door to door in hopes of attracting new converts. Despite the Dahl family’s devotion to their church, there has been a great deal of tension in the household — her father (Jens Jorn Spottag) has been unfaithful to her mother (Sarah Boberg), and while he’s deeply contrite, she’s unwilling to forgive him. One night, Sara goes out with some friends from school and they end up at a dance club where she meets a handsome boy named Teis (Pilou Asbaek). The two feel an immediate attraction to one another, and as Sara falls for Teis, she begins to encounter a world and ideas she’s never considered before, and starts to question the doctrine that she’s been taught since childhood. However, Sara’s parents are uncomfortable with her relationship with Teis, and they discuss her new attitudes with John (Anders W. Berthelsen), the pastor at their church, and he confronts her both privately and publicly about the morality of her new love. To Verdener (aka Worlds Apart) was screened in competition at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival.
