Plot/Synopsis:

A studious young Romany man reluctantly joins his father and a rabble-rousing family friend on a road trip to visit the wife the young man had been promised to years before in director Jiri Vejdelek’s free-wheeling road movie. Jura (Holub Vitezslav) is a well-dressed student who places his education above all else. One day, seemingly out of the blue, Jura’s mustachioed, fedora-wearing father Roman (Marian Labuda) invites his son to jump into a ramshackle truck and join him on a trip from Northern Bohemia to Slovakia. But there’s a catch: when Jura was just a child, Roman and his best friend Stano (Bolek Polivka) arranged the boy to be married to a specific woman when he was old enough to wed. Now that day has come, and the three load up the truck and start down the road that will lead to Jura’s destiny. But it’s not going to be an easy ride, because there’s plenty that can go wrong on the road to Slovakia, and Stano’s penchant for attracting trouble is well known by both of his traveling companions.

Plot/Synopsis:

Comedy about the people who inhabit a small town. For years the overbearing Pavek has endured Otik, the “town idiot,” sharing his meals and the front seat of their dump truck. But Otik is such a sweet-natured fool that Pavek, exasperated as he becomes, always relents on his threats to find another partner. This Laurel and Hardy-like pair are at the heart of a comedy which finds humor in an abundance of everyday situations. The town doctor regularly wrecks his car because he’s admiring the scenery, a romantic teenager develops a hopeless crush on his sister’s schoolteacher, and an adulterous housewife and her boyfriend are just one step ahead of her suspicious, hot-headed husband.

Plot/Synopsis:

A couple, of which the man has a high rank in the Party, returns home after a party, to discover not only that the electricity has been cut off, but also that his superiors are going to be replaced. In a growing state of paranoia, mixed with a strong sense of humor, the couple senses that their house is bugged by the State Police (The EAR) and when at dawn the telephone rings they are prepared for the worst, but it is still worse than that.

Although made in 1970, The Ear (Ucho) was immediately banned by the Czech authorities and remained unseen for twenty years, being finally released only after the Velvet Revolution took place in Czechoslovakia. This landmark film is an extraordinary mix of one of the most direct indictments of life under an oppressive totalitarian system and a not-so-private examination of a disintegrating marital relationship.

Viewed even now, The Ear has not lost any of its sting. As a warning it is even a vehement sting in our so-called i-freedom, threatened by so many bugs…

Plot/Synopsis:

In this comedy, Bohus (Bolek Polivka) is a lazy, brandy swilling not-farmer, who does nothing on his run down farm and only seems to move when he’s invited to have a quickie with a local barmaid. He’s not articulate, and has no higher goals. Thus, when he is informed that he has just inherited a factory, some restaurants, shops and a five-star hotel, its not too surprising that his complete lack of social-climbing aspirations combined with his perpetual readiness to party wreaks havoc in the tidy social world of the big city when he goes to inspect his new property.

Concentration camp commander Kraft finds out that prisoner Kominek is a former professional boxer. Krev Zmizelého ( Shadows of the Deceased), the new war film by director-producer Milan Cieslar and screenwriter Vladimír Körner, is certainly no low-budget affair. In fact, with its surfeit of stunning and monumental photography, well-crafted and fierce action scenes, and inordinate number of extras (for a Czech film, at least), it goes a long way toward being a full-bodied European historical epic.

Plot/Synopsis:

Film is situated in a small town of Komonice in the 60′s, the time of communism, where the only party, represented by chariman of people’s committee and his secretary. Instead of taking care of the people’s needs they build up a fountain. There’s a castle in Komonice and according to a legend there is a good ghost in the castle – White lady. She emerges from the painting on the wall when someone speaks out magic words. White lady builds up a water supply for an old woman who asked for that by the painting. Then she makes a new fence and pavement… Not only her acts but even her existence is not suitable for chairman and his secretary, but they find something better than forbiden her. They want to make a plan for her which is going to be planned and then checked by local people’s committee and than it would be presented as a work of the working class.
Film is full of humour outgoing from everyday communist reality and empty phrases of Communist party leaders.
