Anne-Marie Daehli… Inger Munch – 1875
Johan Halsborg … Dr. Christian Munch – 1884
Gro Jarto … Laura Catherine Munch – 1884

Plot/Synopsis:

Following a rough chronology from 1884 to 1894, when Norwegian artist Edvard Munch began expressionism and established himself as northern Europe’s most maligned and controversial artist, the film also flashes back to the death from consumption of his mother, when he was five, his sister’s death, and his near death at 13 from pulmonary disease. The film finds enduring significance in Munch’s brief affair with “Mrs. Heiberg” and his participation in the café society of anarchist Hans Jaeger in Christiania and later in Berlin with Strindberg. Through it all comes Munch’s melancholy and his desire to render on canvas, cardboard, paper, stone, and wood his innermost feelings.

Famously described by the late Ingmar Bergman as ‘a work of genius’, Peter Watkins’ multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter, it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch’s formative years in late 19th century Kristiania (now Oslo), Watkins uses his trademark style to create a vivid picture of the emotional, political, and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art.

The young artist (Geir Westby) has an affair with ‘Mrs. Heiberg’ (Gro Fraas), a devastating experience that will haunt him for the rest of his life. His work is viciously attacked by critics and public alike and he is forced to leave his home country for Berlin, where, along with the notorious Swedish playwright August Strindberg, he becomes part of the cultural storm that is to sweep Europe.

There have been countless film biographies of famous artists, but only a handful can be considered major works in their own right. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins’ extended 221-minute version, originally made for television.

Hans Henrik Legrfeldt
Valerie Morea – Annah-la-Javanaise
Ghita Nørby – Ida Molard

Plot/Synopsis:

This drama looks into the life of French painter Paul Gauguin. Donald Sutherland plays Gauguin as he struggles through a few years in the 1890s in Montmartre after he has come back from his first stay in Tahiti. His new and radical painting style is not amenable to easy acceptance, as witnessed by August Strindberg’s rejection of it here. The best segments of this film show the artist at work and talking with his friends, other less successful moments show him in amorous liaisons or in one case, in a fight sequence. Most of all, his dedication to his artistic vision as well as the depth of his personality are elements which maintain interest throughout, in a large part due to Sutherland’s insightful portrayal of the artist.

Plot/Synopsis:

A massive six-hour biopic of Napoleon, tracing his career from his schooldays (where a snowball fight is staged like a military campaign), his flight from Corsica, through the French Revolution (where a real storm is intercut with a political storm) and the Terror, culminating in his triumphant invasion of Italy in 1797 (the film stops there because it was intended to be part one of six, but director Abel Gance never raised the money to make the other five). The film’s legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.

Plot/Synopsis:

In 1982, legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda fled his homeland and relocated in France to direct this powerful story about the ethical boundaries of power and leadership, which had many parallels to Poland’s volatile political situation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Danton (Gérard Depardieu) and Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak) were close friends and fought together in the French Revolution, but by 1793 Robespierre was France’s ruler, determined to wipe out opposition with a series of mass executions that became known as the Reign of Terror. Danton, well known as a spokesman of the people, had been living in relative solitude in the French countryside, but he returned to Paris to challenge Robespierre’s violent rule and call for the people to demand their rights. Robespierre, however, could not accept such a challenge, even from a friend and colleague, and he blocked out a plan for the capture and execution of Danton and his allies. Wajda remained in France until 1989, when the collapse of Communist rule made it possible for him to return to his homeland.

Colonel Redl (1985)

Original title: Oberst Redl
AKA: The fiancés
Year: 1985
Runtime: 2 hours, 3 minutes
Country: Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Germany
Language: German
Subtitles: English (.srt)
Genre: Biography | Drama | History

Director: István Szabó

Cast:
Klaus Maria Brandauer … Alfred Redl
Hans Christian Blech … von Roden
Armin Mueller-Stahl … Trónörökös
Gudrun Landgrebe … Kubinyi Katalin
Jan Niklas … Kubinyi Kristóf
László Mensáros … Ruzitska ezredes
András Bálint … Dr. Gustav Sonnenschein
László Gálffi … Alfredo Velocchio
Dorottya Udvaros … Clarissa

Plot/Synopsis:

The second film in the trilogy made by director Istvan Szabo and actor Klaus Maria Brandauer — hammocked between Mephisto and Hanussen — Colonel Redl continues Mephisto’s fascination with a man overwhelmed by history. In that film, Brandauer played an actor who tried to ignore the rise of the Third Reich, and here he’s an ambitious military officer in pre-World War I Austria whose career path is set early on. In military school, he’s forced to inform on a student who’s the source of a practical joke; though he beats himself up for being a Judas, he soon realizes that to rise in the ranks he must overcome his peasant background and hide his homosexuality by ingratiating himself with his superiors.

In time, he becomes Chief of Military Intelligence for the Austro-Hungarian empire. Though he professes to hate politics and politicians, Redl also can’t avoid them. When the leader for whom Redl is supposedly spying among the officer corps, draws up a list of who can’t be exposed for traitorous activities (including Austrian nobles, Hungarians, Czechs, Serbs, Croatians, and even the usual scapegoats, Jews — the aftershocks of the Dreyfuss affair are still rumbling), he tells Redl that he must find a double of himself, a Ukrainian. Now certain that he will be exposed, Redl surrenders to fate, quoting to his wife from Montaigne: “It’s no sin to be involved. It’s a sin to remain involved.” Brandauer is a wonder as the self-loathing Redl, and Szabo’s camera picks up every nuance on his expressive face. The film eschews music except for several party scenes, and the absence of a score is most effective in the final shots of Redl’s fellow officers awaiting his fate.
