Nestled in a cluster of lush mountains is a mysterious ancient forest known as the “Devil’s Garden,” where the olm, lynx, black stork, wolfs, bears and Ural owl live together in an enchanted world of thunderous waterfalls, cascading lakes, and subterranean caverns. Not long ago, mankind nearly destroyed this land with warfare. But nature has found an ingenious way to rejuvenate this land, almost as if by miracle.
This Eden is Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest national park in Europe, located in Croatia’s Dinaric Mountains. Plundered during the Balkan War a decade ago, Plitvice owes its new existence to a type of limestone called travertine, which has the ability to grow quickly and continuously, creating new pools and barriers, water slides, and cascades. There are 16 falling lakes arranged in breathtaking terraces, connected by countless waterfalls and rapids.
Underneath the Dinaric Mountains, rainwater gathers and rushes through subterranean caverns, drawing lime from the stone. Here, stalactites hang and species dwell that are so rare and strange they defy the imagination.

Plot/Synopsis:

Plot/Synopsis:
Segment 1 – Mosaik im Vertrauen:
Kubelka’s first feature consists of a disjointed sequence of images with the sound and image not running synchronously. The sequence of images leaps, sometimes interrupted by secondary events and sometimes unfolding in the reverse order to the way things ordinarily occur. Thus the story is put together enigmatically like the stones of a mosaic.

Segment 2 – Adebar:
Using images of dancing figures in extremely high contrast black-and-white shots, the images are stripped down to their black-and-white essentials so that they can be used in an almost terrifyingly precise construct of image, motion, and repeated sound.

Segment 3 – Schwechater:
Hired to make a short commercial for Scwechater beer, the beer company undoubtedly thought they were commissioning a film that would help them sell their beers. But Kubelka had other ideas.

Segment 4 – Arnulf Rainer:
Composed entirely of frames of solid black and solid white, strung together in lengths as long as 24 seconds and as short as a single frame.

Segment 5 – Unsere Afrikareise:
A semi-docu images of a hunting-trip in Africa. White hunters, naked natives, animals,… pass by in a manner that preserves the individuality of each, but at the same time, the editing of sound and image brings these systems into comparison and collision, producing a complex of multiple meanings, statements, ironies…

Segment 6 – Pause!:
Focussing purely on Arnulf Rainer himself and his expressions and movements, it attemps to ‘dissolve’ Arnulf Rainer.
