Plot/Synopsis:

Our main quartet of characters cross paths in a fast-paced beginning wherein Devereaux is pulled over for reckless endangerment and speeding by the handsome detective Eric Visnjnic (Joseph Beattie) whom she’s unable to convince to let her off of the hook with her rationale that had she injured or killed anyone, it would’ve been natural selection of weeding out those too stupid to get out of the way.

With Katie and her coworkers perpetually striving to get free pizza by strategically planning when their tow truck will be blocking his path, the local motor scooter driving pizza delivery man Mike (Andrew W. Walker) finds himself in the midst of more than just another joke when it’s Nicole’s car blocking his way and as we later discover Katie’s boyfriend Eric who sends him flying off the bike while in pursuit of criminals.

Although it’s the first times the characters will all intersect, it definitely isn’t the last as Mike later “borrows” the keys for Nicole’s car when it’s in Katie’s garage and proceeds to total it while taking part in one of their ritualistic street races– incidentally the same one Eric participates in to help Katie try to pay off her debt while fully realizing he’ll lose his badge if anyone catches him. As the plot circles around the track closer to the finish line when a local mobster and his associates are also tied into the situation, the film continually picks up momentum, only hitting a few speed bumps along the way in some dubious suspension of disbelief moments, some exploitative “sex on the car” sequences and a few instances wherein the payoff feels rushed and doesn’t fully satisfy our questions or the dilemmas raised earlier on in the movie.

Despite some of the flaws, they’re never enough to make us hit eject and much easier to forgive with the solid production values of the work. And aside from making our female lead prostitute herself out of debt in a rushed yet sleazy moment once onscreen, it’s nonetheless refreshingly to find that unlike American movies where we would’ve just cast her as the feisty girlfriend who stands by her man whether it’s Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Nicolas Cage or Mark Wahlberg, the film ultimately centers on a strong-willed, independent female with a feisty boyfriend.

Plot/Synopsis:

Brendan Fletcher plays Bill, a young man who plans possibly the biggest killing spree in history, gunning down innocent people in a small town. Unlike Falling Down, the film doesn’t feature a bad guy and the good guy trying to stop him. Instead, we see the mass murder spree from the point of view of Bill, who you will sometimes find yourself relating to, especially in the early minutes of the film before the killings. And that is why this film works — it puts you in a very uncomfortable position. When Bill walked into a bingo hall with hundreds of old men and women, my mouth was never open wider in anticipation of what horrible things may come to follow.

Plot/Synopsis:

Nirvana is a science fiction film, produced in Italy in 1997 by director Gabriele Salvatores, starring Christopher Lambert, Diego Abatantuono and Stefania Rocca. It was screened out of competition at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.

Nirvana is a pretty good low-budget cyberpunk flick with a strange virtual reality (VR) angle. Jimi (Lambert) is a computer programmer who is working on a VR simulation game with very realistic seeming characters. Somehow a strange virus infects his game and turns one of his VR characters into a self-aware program. The VR character has to “relive” the game sequence almost in a groundhog day type fashion, only each time he has to figure out how to avoid getting killed so he can progress further into the plot. The game is 3 days away from being distributed everywhere and the program doesn’t want to be duplicated everywhere, and worse, feels trapped in a nightmare. Lambert feels bad for the VR character and starts working to get the program deleted from corporate.

Unfortunately, this involves hacking into the corporation’s corporate system. To do this, Jimi has to go to the seedy part of town outside the barriers to find the expertise he needs. Jimi is also distraught by recently losing the love of his life, Lisa, who left him for still undetermined reasons. Jimi stumbles upon Joystick, a former cowboy (hacker), who has lost his eyesight and now has to rely on failing eye implants to see. Jimi tells Joystick that the corporate system is also home to millions in illegal funds, that can be stolen with the right hack. Joystick and Jimi work out a plan to break into the corporate system. Along the way, they meet up with Naima, a computer expert, who also has a way of bringing Jimi back to Lisa. Unfortunately, the corporate agents are on Jimi’s trail, and want the final verison of the game.

Plot/Synopsis:

Timur Bekmambetov, the Russian director of Wanted, is the producer of a new Russian film called Chernaya Molniya (a.k.a Black Lightning). The premise involves a college kid having no luck with the girl of his dreams, until he comes into possession of a flying car that makes him a superhero.
The story concerns a Russian college student who buys a second hand car which turns out to have magical powers, yes it can fly, and it turns him into the superhero who has to protect the city. Think Back to the Future II meets Spider-Man and you’ve got some idea of what this movie is about.

The film is directed by Alexander Voytinskiy and Dmitry Kiselev with Timur producing.
This has been touted as the “Russian response for Transformers and Batman” by Timur himself who is co-producing behind his own company, Bazelevs with Universal Pictures. The film seems to be an ode to the every day heroes, those that live for others and not themselves. The car is a Volga which has a rich history and connotations in Russian culture, kind of like a Russian Mercedes. It was considered a luxury car for middle to high management and political figures, but it’s not the most luxurious car for top leaders.

Plot/Synopsis:

A career criminal stumbles upon his big chance to get out of the business, though not everyone thinks it’s such a good idea, in this witty thriller. Torkild (Soren Pilmark) is the leader of a band of small-time crooks; having just celebrated his 40th birthday (which coincided with his being dumped by his girlfriend), Torkild is looking to land a big score so he can get out of the business. After they’ve made their getaway, Torkild discovers why everyone was fighting over the bag — it contains over four million kroner ($500,000 in American currency) — and he and his partners decide they’re not keen on turning it over to the Man From Faro. After their car breaks down, Torkild and company happen upon an old restaurant that’s up for sale, and they decide to use their newfound wealth to buy it and go into business — which would be complicated enough without the arrival of the Man From Faro, who wants to know what happened to the money he hired Torkild to steal. Blinkende Lygter also stars Iben Hjejle, who gained the attention of American audiences as John Cusack’s love interest in the film High Fidelity.

Plot/Synopsis:

Russian films made in the 1970s which deal with the Civil War (1918-21) there often have qualities which make them resemble American westerns. Nikita Mikhalkov is one of the better-known of the post-Soviet filmmakers; he won an Oscar for his 1994 film Burnt By The Sun. This very popular 1973 film was his first; he was 28 at the time. Svoid sredi… is told in an unconventional manner (especially for Soviet films of the time) reminiscent of the films of Sergio Leone. The story recounts the many exploits of Shilov (Yuri Bogaryrev) who seeks to recapture a stolen gold shipment that belongs to the Red Army. He is suspected of stealing the gold himself, and he seeks to clear his name.
