Plot/Synopsis:

This is a film of the dramatic Spanish language novel Celestina, written in 1499. In many ways, it resembles Romeo and Juliet, particularly in the need for secrecy in the wooing of a beloved and the troubles resulting from that secrecy. Callisto (Juan Diego Botto) enlists the aid of his roguish servants and the mature woman Celestina (Terele Pavez) to help him win the heart of Melibea (Penelope Cruz). In gratitude for Celestina’s efforts, he rewards her with a sentimentally valuable article of clothing. When Callisto’s two jealous servants hear of this, they try to get Celestina to give them what they feel is their "share" for their efforts on Callisto’s behalf. Failing in this, they kill Celestina. Her friends discover her corpse and vow to get revenge for her murder, but it is Callisto whom they blame for it, not his miserable servants.

Director: Luchino Visconti

Clara Calamai … Giovanna Bragana
Massimo Girotti … Gino Costa
Dhia Cristiani … Anita
Elio Marcuzzo … Lo spagnolo
Vittorio Duse … L’agente di polizia
Michele Riccardini … Don Remigio
Juan de Landa … Giuseppe Bragana

Plot/Synopsis:

Often considered one of the first examples of Italian neorealism, Luchino Visconti’s first film was this adaptation of James M. Cain’s steamy novel The Postman Always Rings Twice, which would also be made twice in the U.S., first in 1946 with Lana Turner and John Garfield and then in 1981 with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange. Massimo Girotti stars as a drifter named Gino, who gets a job at a provincial inn. The handsome wanderer attempts to resist the advances of Giovanna (Clara Calamai), the estranged wife of nasty innkeeper Bragana (Juan de Landa), but he eventually gives in. Gino then allows her to talk him into killing Bragana to get the insurance money, with predictable results. Although the melodramatic story is a far cry from the post-war social statements of such later neorealist classics as Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City (1945) and Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948 ), the movie began to feature some of neorealism’s defining characteristics: above all, an emphasis on outdoor shooting and natural light and a relentless focus on the lives of the poor. Ossessione caused a sensation not just because of its lurid subject matter but also because Visconti’s realist style makes you practically feel the heat and dirt and sweat of the film’s environment.

Plot/Synopsis:

With an international chess tournament in progress, a young man becomes completely obsessed with the game. His fiancée has no interest in it, and becomes frustrated and depressed by his neglect of her, but wherever she goes she finds that she cannot escape chess. On the brink of giving up, she meets the world champion, Capablanca himself, with interesting results.

Though not his first film, Russian director/cinema theorist V. I. Pudovkin’s Chess Fever (Shakhmatanya goryachka) was the first to be released. Essentially a comedy, this 2-reel exercise in montage manages to make the game of chess seem thoroughly cinematic. Illustrating his theory that “The foundation of film art is editing”, Pudovkin uses apparently unrelated images to fashion a smooth, well-integrated unified whole. He goes so far as to rabbet in shots of legendary chess master Capablanca so that his film will have a “star”. Chess Fever was but a prologue for the Pudovkin masterpieces to come: Mother (1926), The End of St. Petersburg (1927) and Storm Over Asia (1928 ). — Allmovie.com

The Return (2003)

Yelizaveta Aleksandrova … Waitress
Lazar Dubovik … Hooligan
Lyubov Kazakova … Devushka v zerkalakh
Galina Petrova … Grandmother
Aleksei Suknovalov … Zavodila
Andrei Sumin … Man at Port

Plot/Synopsis:

Director Andrei Zvyagintsev makes a phenomenally assured directorial debut with THE RETURN. The spare tale focuses on two young brothers, Andrey (Vladimir Garin) and Vanya (Ivan Dobronravov), whose lives are thrown into a tailspin when their father (Konstantin Lavroneko) returns after a 12-year absence. Bullish and intense, the patriarch takes the boys on a mysterious journey through a bleak yet beautiful Russian landscape. While Andrey looks up to his father, Vanya has trouble forgiving him for disappearing so many years ago. This strain adds even more drama to the already tense atmosphere, culminating in a shocking event that will change their lives forever.
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2003 Venice Film Festival, THE RETURN is a masterful drama that works on an allegorical, as well as literal, level. Zvyaginstev’s imagery is at once painterly, abstract, and realistic. Newcomers Garin and Dobronravov deliver performances that are deeply affecting. In a cruel twist of irony, actor Garin drowned just after shooting in the same water where the opening scene took place, which adds another level of bleakness to the film’s somber tone. THE RETURN is a truly haunting work of art.
