Plot/Synopsis:

The film debut of Catalan theater director Ferran Audi, The Frost is a contempo Norway-set update of Ibsen’s play Little Eyolf. But despite the injection of some southern blood, and numerous helicopter shots of snowscapes and fjords, this Spanish-Norwegian look at a grieving family remains emotionally cold and too legit-like. Beyond Scandinavia and Spain, the pic is on thin ice.
…Alfred and Rita [are] a couple on a collision course after the accidental death of their son.
Biggest change to Ibsen’s original text is that Raul, the love interest of Alfred’s sister (the best thing in the movie), also happens to be Rita’s brother, adding to the incestuous overtones. Dialogue in a mix of languages works reasonably well, even if the theatricality of the words doesn’t always match the realistic setting. Some of the more outlandish touches and characters, including a Pied Piper of Hamelin-like Rat Woman, also strain credibility.

Plot/Synopsis:

The principle of composition of Birth Certificate is not obvious. When watching a novella film, we tend to think in terms of traditional theatre. We expect that a miniature story will finish with a sharp point; the three film novellas in Rozewicz’s work lack this feature. We do not know what will be happen to the boy making his alone through the forest towards the end of On the Road. We do not know whether in Letter from the Camp, the help offered by the small heroes to a Soviet prisoner will rescue him from the unknown fate of his compatriots. The fate of the Jewish girl from Drop of Blood is also unclear. Will she keep her new impersonation as Marysia Malinowska? Or will the Nazis make her into a representative of the Nordic race? Those questions were asked by the director for a reason. He preceived war as chaos and perdition, and not as linear history that could be reflected in a plot. Although Birth Certificate is saturated with moral content, it does not aim to be a morality play. But with the immense pressure of reality, no varient of fate should be excluded. This approached can be compared wth Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Blind Chance 25 years later, which pictured dramatic choices of a different era.

Plot/Synopsis:

Pierre, a pious young man, left his Catholic boarding school to live with his parents in their villa on the Canary Islands

Shortly after his arrival on the island, Pierre’s father dies, leaving him alone with his mother, Hélène

After his father’s death, Pierre finds out that Hélène is a promiscuous sexual debauchee and is not ashamed to admit it

Pierre tries hard to accept this revelation and eventually begins to get sucked into his mother’s world of moral degradation, coupled with his budding desire to have Hélène for himself

Plot/Synopsis:

Louis-Philippe Fourchaume, another typical lead-role for French comedy superstar Louis de Funès, is the dictatorial CEO of a French company which designs and produces sail yachts, and fires in yet another tantrum his designer André Castagnier, not realizing that man is his only chance to land a vital contract with the Italian magnate Marcello Cacciaperotti. So he has to find him at his extremely rural birthplace in ‘la France profonde’, which proves a torturous odyssey for the spoiled rich man; when he does get there his torment is far from over: the country bumpkin refuses to resume his slavish position now the shoe is on the other foot, so Fourchaume is dragged along in the boorish family life, and at times unable to control his temper, which may cost him more credit then he painstakingly builds up…

Plot/Synopsis:

Plot/Synopsis:

Winter Twilight by Stanislaw Lenartowicz is one of the films that presaged the emergence of the Polish Film School as a recognised and independent trend. Shot in 1956, it had its premiere on 1 February 1957, three months before the screening of Kanal/They Loved Life by Andrzej Wajda at Cannes. If we were to analyse the film using the most frequently applied criterion for distinguishing works of the school – provoking audience awareness by raising topics concerned with recent history – Lenartowicz’s debut would hardly pass this benchmark. However, if we consider the Polish School to be a complex artistic formation of diverse films created by directors debuting on the verge of a cultural breakthrough – the October 1956 phenomena that was characterised by expressive direction and widespread divergence from the established poetics of social realism – Winter Twilight should be recognised as one of it most important precursory works.

Plot/Synopsis:

Based upon true events Eduart, a young man raised in a cruel and oppressive family environment, leaves Albania with the dream of becoming a rock star and living a better life. His reckless character and the passions of his youth lead him to commit a murder in Athens. Chased by everyone, even by his own self, he is imprisoned under the harshest conditions. Eduart, with the help of a German doctor, learns to feel sympathy for others and guilt for his crime. His deep remorse will lead him from darkness to light.

Eshref Durmishi plays Eduart with supporting actors Ermela Teli as Eduart’s sister, Ndricim Xhepa as his army general father who turns him in for robbery and Adrian Aziri as a kind inmate.

Cinematographer Jürgen Jürges, who has filmed some of Fassbinder and Haneke’s most important films, brings an understated look of grace to the film that perfectly matches Antoniou’s subdued tone, while editor Takis Yannopoulos (Nyfes (Brides)) strings all the scenes together here with a nice forward momentum but without haste.

The Greek-German co-production was named the Best Greek Film at the 2006 Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Plot/Synopsis:

The Mercenary, also known as A Professional Gun, is a 1968 spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Corbucci. The film stars Franco Nero, Jack Palance, Tony Musante and Giovanna Ralli, and features a musical score by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai. The film takes place during the Mexican Revolution and is a well-known example of the Zapata Western subgenre.
The Mercenary was released the same year as Corbucci’s more popular western, The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio). The film is often compared to Corbucci’s 1970 film, Compañeros (Vamos a matar, compañeros), which features Nero and Palance in similar roles, and Tomas Milian in a role similar to Musante’s in The Mercenary. Both films also had Morricone as the composer, Alejandro Ulloa as the cinematographer and Eugenio Alabiso as the editor. The Mercenary’s theme music L’arena was later used by Quentin Tarantino in the 2004 film Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

Crazy Desire (La Voglia Matta) stars Ugo Tognazzi as a middle-aged Italian businessman on a cross country motor trip. He comes across a group of rambunctious teenagers, including sexy Catherine Spaak. Infatuated by the girl, Tognazzi allows Spaak to deplete his pocketbook to pay for a wild seaside spree for herself and her friends. When challenged to a fight by the leader of the kids, Tognazzi, much to his own surprise, wins, and is hailed as “one of the gang.” But when he wakes up on the beach the next morning, he’s all alone. Alternately wacky and wistful, Crazy Desire was the film that secured the international reputation of Italian director Luciano Salce. From the opening sequence during a amateurish outdoor production of Julius Caesar to the closing seascape shot of the solitary and bemused Ugo Tognazzi, there’s hardly a false move in the picture. Crazy Desire was based on Enrico Siella’s short story A Girl Named Francesca.
