Plot/Synopsis:
Bernard meets Jane in a Night Club, in London, and he likes her. Her father was killed in a car accident, but Jane thinks he has been killed because he was blackmailed for a picture of his second wife, Jane’s mother in law. In the same Night Club Bernard finds the blackmailer corpse and Jane near him, but he believes she is innocent. So Bernard and Jane run away followed by a dwarf, the blackmailer’s men, who believe Bernard killed their boss and of course, the Police. With Stalker, Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky returns to the mind-bending, philosophy-tinged science fiction of Solaris. The setting is an unnamed country in an unforeseen postapocalyptic future. A meteorite has landed, and its impact has created a mysterious phenomenon known as the Zone, within which resides a sinister room said to grant humanity’s deepest desires. The film follows one such Stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) as he attempts to bring two characters known as Writer (Anatoli Solonitsyn) and Scientist (Nikolai Grinko) into the Zone. The hapless trio makes a difficult and mud-drenched journey, dodging military guards and invisible traps and enduring extreme psychological strain. While Tarkovsky avoids any direct political reading of Stalker, the film’s allegorical structure presents a powerful and disturbing metaphor for humanity’s loss of and subsequent quest for faith. The Stalker’s struggle to rescue himself and his family while guiding those more wretched than himself creates a physical and metaphysical drama that leaves the viewer breathless. Blending visual, narrative, and cinematic conventions to portray the fractured logic of the Zone, Tarkovsky conjures a universe of despair and desire in which science, rationalism, and technology must face off against love, humanism, and faith. Based on a true incident, this powerful anti-war drama from West Germany tells of a group of teenagers in 1945 who are drafted into the remnants of Hitler’s army. The Bridge is one of the most-powerful antiwar films ever made. Based on an autobiographical novel by Manfred Gregor, it depicts seven Bavarian schoolboys who face death defending an insignificant bridge against an American attack in the last days of World War 2. The film first vividly pictures the home lives and personal problems of the boys. Then we see the boys joyfully discover they are being drafted into the Wehrmacht, after which they are assigned to defend a bridge at the edge of their town. Unknown to them, a colonel has given them this assignment because the bridge is strategically useless, planning to withdraw them before the Germans blow it up.
This film did not come easily to the screen. Many publishers rejected Manfred Gregor’s book, several directors rejected the script, and the young actors in the film had little or no experience. Yet in the end The Bridge succeeded spectacularly. The director, Bernhard Wicki, was able to elicit harrowing performances from his cast, and the film received accolades from all over the World, including an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award in America.
